The instructions are tricky, but with a bit of practice you can turn out some cool shit with TileMill and your mac!
First download the maps that you are interested in from download.geofabrik.de/osm/
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb -U postgres arabian_gulf
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql -U postgres -d arabian_gulf -f /usr/local/pgsql/share/contrib/postgis-1.5/postgis.sql
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql -U postgres -d arabian_gulf -f /usr/local/pgsql/share/contrib/postgis-1.5/spatial_ref_sys.sql
mv scotland.mml arabian_gulf.mml
bzcat ~/Desktop/gcc_states.osm.bz2 | osm2pgsql --user postgres -d bahrain -S /usr/local/share/osm2pgsql/default.style -
